# Discord — Artist Channels

The **Artists** category holds two different things. They work differently, so
it's worth being clear about which is which.

## `#pd-artist-only-public-chat`

The shared room for artists. **Only artists can post in it; everyone can read
it.** It's public in the sense that nothing is hidden — the conversation happens
in the open — but the talking is theirs.

That rule applies to this one channel. It is not how the rest of the category
works.

## Your own channel — a fan channel

**Your channel is created when you upload your first project. Not before.**

Not when you're approved. Not when you're whitelisted. Not when you join the
server. **The channel waits for the upload**, and appears the moment it lands —
named after your PD handle, `#@yourname`, in the **Artists** category below the
artist chat.

That timing is deliberate. PD whitelists artists quietly: getting in isn't
announced, and nothing in the server marks you out beforehand. Your channel
appearing *is* the announcement — the first public sign that you're an artist
here is the work itself showing up.

You don't request the channel and you don't set it up. Uploading is the whole
trigger.

**It is a fan channel, and it is fully public.** Anyone can post in it. It exists
for collectors — somewhere to talk about your work, ask about it, and show what
they've picked up.

### You are under no obligation to be there

This is the important part. The channel is yours in name, not in duty:

- **You don't have to post in it.** Ever. It runs perfectly well without you.
- **You don't have to moderate it or keep it alive.** Nobody expects you to.
- **You can ignore it entirely** and nothing breaks.

It was built for the people who collect you, not as a job handed to you.

### If you do want to run it

Some artists will want to take the wheel — post there, set the tone, shape what
it's for. That's welcome, and it's a simple ask: **message Brendon and it's
yours.** There's no form and no process.

## The channel list

| Channel | Who can post | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| `#pd-artist-only-public-chat` | Artists only | The shared artist room. Everyone can read. |
| `#@artistname` | Anyone | A fan channel per artist, created on their first project upload. |

## If you haven't uploaded yet

You won't have a channel of your own until your first project is uploaded —
being whitelisted doesn't create one, and there's nothing to chase. You can read
everything, and you can post in other artists' fan channels like anyone else.
See [Submit a Project](/docs/for-artists/submit-a-project) for how to get there.
